BULGARIA,
officially the Republic of Bulgaria, is a
country in Southeastern Europe. It is a
member of the European Union. Bulgaria
borders Romania to the north, Serbia and
Macedonia to the west, Greece and Turkey
to the south, and the Black Sea to the
east. Founded in the 7th century, Bulgaria
is one of the oldest states in Europe.
The population of Bulgaria is about 7 million, roughly one-sixth of which live in the capital Sofia. The official language is Bulgarian, written in the Cyrillic alphabet. The country is remarkable for its variety of scenery; its rugged mountains and relaxing Black Sea resorts attract many visitors. Bulgaria has a moderate climate with a hot, dry summer and a cold winter. It is one of Europe's most biodiversity rich countries. Almost a third of Bulgaria is forested. The citizens of European Union, Australia, Canada, Iceland, Israel, Japan, Lichtenstein, Malaysia, Norway, Republic of Korea, Singapore, Switzerland, Taiwan, UAE, USA and the holders of valid Schengen visas do not need a visa to travel to Bulgaria. Please visit the website of Ministry of Foreign Affairs for more comprehensive and up-to-date information. Velingrad is a town in Southern Bulgaria, located in the Rhodope Mountains. It is one of the most popular Bulgarian balneological resorts. The town has a population of about 24,000 inhabitants. It is situated at 750–850 m above sea level. The city has a mountain climate. The annual duration of sunshine is about 2,000 hours. Surrounded by age-old pine tree woods, the town favors abundant sunshine. There are many tombs left from the Thracians. Ruins of Thracian settlements and fortresses can be seen in the locality of "Pechkovets", at the foot of the medieval fortress of Tsepina, where fragments of Thracian pottery and implements of labour have also been found, and elsewhere.
